Emmy spotlight: Kristen Bell should earn her first Emmy nomination for ‘The Good Place’s’ moving series finale

Emmy spotlight: Kristen Bell should earn her first Emmy nomination for ‘The Good Place’s’ moving series finale
The Good Place” ended its four season run with a fittingly bittersweet finale that touched on everything that made the show great. The series was ultimately about how people can help each other to be better and kinder and overcome their flaws, and perhaps no character better exemplified that ethos than Eleanor Shellstrop, played with a quick wit and subtle empathy by Kristen Bell.

Eleanor gave Bell the opportunity to show off her impressive comedic skills (could anyone else nail the line “What the fork?” like she does?) as well as underrated dramatic chops. Through her performance, we saw how her character used snark and sarcasm to cover her true feelings and inner pain, which become obvious whenever emotion comes bubbling up uncontrollably. Could this be the year that her work on the show is finally recognized by Emmy voters?

D’Arcy Carden (‘The Good Place’): If Janet is not a girl, ‘what the hell is she?’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
“What the hell is she?” asks D’Arcy Carden about the character she played on “The Good Place” for four seasons. Watch our exclusive interview with her above. She continues, “I don’t know how to act a computer. So I had to find humanity. She has a childlike innocence. I could find innocence and vulnerability as she evolved. My way of viewing Janet is different than how creator Mike Schur would. Over time she certainly became more human. She doesn’t have organs inside of her, or a heart, but I think she has a soul.”

Carden’s Janet is the cheerful robotic assistant in the afterlife set show. The actress explains, “I loved having her evolve over the four seasons. It was scary and stressful and I wanted to get it right, but it was a gift as an actor. Particularly playing a character that could have stayed one note the entire time.

Emmy’s parting gift for ‘The Good Place’ could come in writing or directing, just like ’30 Rock,’ ‘Larry Sanders Show’ …
Parting is such sweet sorrow, and that’s never more evident than at the Emmys. In recent years we’ve seen several shows honored with writing or directing wins for their emotional series finales, including “The Larry Sanders Show” (comedy writing & directing in 1998), “30 Rock” (comedy writing in 2013), “The Sopranos” (drama writing in 2007), “The Americans” (drama writing in 2018), “ER” (drama directing in 2009) and “Friday Night Lights” (drama directing in 2011). Might that signal some forking good news for once for NBC’s dearly departed “The Good Place”?

The well-received series finale, “Whenever You’re Ready,” aired January 30 and was written and directed by creator Michael Schur. In the two-part episode, our favorite humans — Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jason (Manny Jacinto) — live out their final days in the afterlife as they all eventually find their own peace. With demon Michael (Ted Danson) feeling alone, Eleanor

Quibi – allegedly pronounced “kwibby” – is the latest service to enter the streaming game, and its strategy is unique. The streamer’s mobile-only content is designed to be consumed in small chunks, or “quick bites,” but unlike its competitors such as YouTube, the shows on Quibi will have big name stars and production values similar to what you’d find on a major network. Creators Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman are betting that in our modern society of short attention spans there is an audience for well-crafted entertainment that can be watched quickly while on the go. Interested in giving it a try? We’ve got a list of all the current and upcoming Quibi shows that we’re most excited to check out.

Emmy spotlight: ‘The Good Place’ could win a fork-ton of awards like last year’s cult hit ‘Fleabag’
Over its four seasons, “The Good Place” steadily became one of the most celebrated, meme-able comedies on television, and notably, one of the last remaining broadcast network comedies to earn acclaim from critics, TV audiences and awards bodies alike. The high-concept sitcom set almost entirely in the afterlife earned praise from early on for its whip-smart writing that blends irreverent comedy with science-fiction, fantasy and philosophy. It also boasted an accomplished cast led by Ted Danson and Kristen Bell, with D’Arcy Carden, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil and Manny Jacinto making names for themselves in the supporting cast. With the final season having just ended earlier this year, will Emmy voters see fit to coronate “The Good Place” for its farewell like they did with “Fleabag,” last year’s cool show of the moment?
